LMJ Solicitors – Experts in Criminal and Prison Law

We have expertise in every area of criminal law, including extradition and confiscation proceedings as well as prison law, so we can offer a highly dedicated service whether are under investigation or charge, or whether you are a convicted person.

Types of work our Criminal Defence Solicitors undertake

We bear in mind always that a criminal investigation or prosecution can be a very stressful and traumatic time for you and your family and that, as well as the best advice and representation, some empathy and understanding are also important.

We undertake both legally aided and private work. We encourage and assist you to apply for Legal Aid so that your costs are covered from start to finish. Where legal aid is not available, you will find our rates very competitive and we will usually offer a fixed fee. Whether private or public-funded, big case or small, we offer you the same dedication and professionalism.

Why work with LMJ Criminal and Prison Law Solicitors?

The State now has unprecedented power and resources to investigate and prosecute its own citizens. More than ever, you need a solicitor capable and experienced enough to defend you boldly and confidently.

Each solicitor at LMJ is a criminal practitioner with many years of experience. This means that you can rest assured that your case will be conducted by a solicitor with an abundance of relevant knowledge and expertise, committed to achieving the best outcome possible, and able to handle with assurance whatever the police or prosecution may throw at you.

We also offer a personalised and friendly service. You will find that your solicitor is accessible – no switchboard and our personal mobile numbers are available to all clients and we have a 24/7 emergency contact number. Furthermore, we run a free telephone advice line for prisoners on Saturdays.

More about our work

We have experience in all kinds of large, serious and complex cases including murder, organised crime, serious fraud and conspiracies, terrorism and spying cases.

Two of the many murder cases conducted by our lawyers were respectively the longest and largest in the history of The Old Bailey.

We have undertaken many high profile judicial reviews for prisoners. For example, we took on and defeated the government over its prisoner book ban policy. More recently we defeated the government again in the Supreme Court over discrimination against women prisoners

However, we are also happy to undertake most types of general crime and prison law cases. Make an enquiry now.

Legal Aid

We are happy to accept legally aided cases and we will help you to apply. Legal aid is available subject to testing for ‘merit’ and testing for ‘means’.

– Merit

you will qualify for legal aid if the offence you are charged with is serious enough for a prison sentence; or if the case is legally too complicated for you to deal with it; or if you would have particular difficulty in representing yourself eg. because of age, disability or language abilities.

– Means

You will qualify for legal aid in the Magistrates’ Court if your income is low enough. If your yearly income is less than £12,475 you qualify (subject to merit as above).

If your income is greater, you may qualify depending on a further means test, but not if your income is over £22,325.

In the Crown Court, you may qualify for legal aid if you have an income of up to £37,500, although a monthly contribution may be required.
